This is an historice river, the Choptank, which runs into the Chesapeake Bay. In addition to providing a livilihood for generations of working watermen, it is part of the Underground Railroad and was often used by slaves escaping north. I've painted this river many times, first from the simple acknowlegement of its part of the local ecosystem and its incredible beauty, but now I want to celebrate it's historical significance in the human quest for freedom.
