Although there appears to be quite a bit of land in this painting, in reality it is almost all water. The marshes of the Choptank River, a tributary of the Chesapeake bay, are fragile and in danger of disappearing as sea water rises. The Choptank River is also taking it's place in history as part of the Underground Railway. If you look carefully you will see the common Red-winged Blackbird in the lower left corner and a flock of blackbirds rising in the distance. My title, Rise Up!, has many meanings.
