"String of Pearls" was created from a 12x16 plein air sketch, with a vantage point from the top of the highest ridge in San Clemente, CA. The painting is about different kinds of light and their relationship: the setting sun (natural light), the sun's reflection in the water (reflected light), the lights on the pier, in the town and on the freeway (artificial light). Since the painting is also about space and distance, I selected a larger-scale canvas to portray this concept.
